Walking The States

Journal Entry: Tue Mar 7, 2006, 1:12 PM
A brief intro: Very good man - wants to be a writer; Figures he needs to experience life in order to write.

So he makes things happen. Did the 'walk to Rome' armed with little more than an umbrella and a truckle of cheese. Has his sights set on the US. His companion is a very funny man.

They are the states.

I urge you to aid them in any way you can, and attach Stu's email below for a quick synopsis - (I was hooked at the end when he mentioned sponsored Role-playing :):

Dear all

Greetings from Denmark, home of the brave cartoonist. This is a mail to let you know that there is a new website in your life. Yes, for those of you who have read the Internet once and grown bored with its pictures of scanned cats, videos of fainting goats or blogs by middle-aged men pretending to be high-class hookers then this new site is for you.

Some of you might know about my latest travelling scheme, others of you may still be in the dark. Suffice to say, I, along with great mate Dave Toolan, am going to walk across the US. East coast to west. 5057 miles. 11 states. Cities, forests, rivers, mountains, deserts. Motels, hotels, notels and tents. Fox TV, National Enquirer and The Daily Show. You get the idea.

We start on June 4th. Everything to do with the walk can be found at:

Please visit and marvel at us trying to be funny in words and pictures. There’s plenty of explanation of why we are doing this on the site so I won’t repeat it here – go read. However, I wonder if I might be so bold as to ask for your help with a few things? Let me break it down:

• Tell your friends! And tell your friends to tell their friends. Please circulate the URL to those you think might be at all interested in two blokes crossing the US on foot. We need to publicise this baby because

• We need as much help as we can get with our preparations. We are self-funding the trip but are looking for donations of camping/trekking equipment and clothing, video/camera/v.small laptop equipment, plane tickets or insurance. Maybe, just maybe, word might spread to the right places and someone might be interested in helping us out in some way. In return, we can offer substantial publicity on the website and in the documentation of the walk and we will big up potential sponsors at any opportunity we have (and we think we will get good US publicity because we are the first Europeans to attempt this crossing)

• Please visit the site as often as you can, and on as many different computers as you can. Why? Well, we need page hits to generate attractive traffic levels for potential sponsors and get search engines interested. If you have a website, please link to us! We will link to you. Also, if you can, please leave the site open in a different browser window the one you are using for a while each day. This will make it seem that people are hanging out on the site because of its amazing wonderfulness

• Yes, we know this is manipulation of the highest order. But who is not doing it? We think our site is brilliantly designed (cheers Bastian and Alex!) and well worth visiting, and we don’t want it to languish unnoticed. We’re gonna be away for nearly two years, and we want people to follow us. A little massaging of our popularity at the beginning of our adventure isn’t going to hurt anyone. Is it?

• Sign the guestbook. Join us!

• Finally, and very importantly, please consider sponsoring us. Not in terms of equipment, but to help us raise money for the British Heart Foundation. Because of recent events in our families we have chosen to raise money for this most universal of causes. Heart disease is the number one killer in both the UK and the US and few of us do not know someone who has been affected. For more information on helping us raise money by sponsoring us, please visit the Sponsors link on the left hand side of the website. From there you can go to a secure section of the British Heart Foundation’s website and pledge some money to the cause. This is big thing for me as the last sponsored event I did was a 24 hour sponsored roleplay when I was 13. I would really like to raise more than the £54.17 raised during that event…

So endeth the mail. Hello to everyone I haven’t mailed for a while – apologies to jump back into your inboxes with a blatant piece of self-advertising. If you’re angry, excited, have any comments on the website or journey or are just bored, please mail me here at hotmail or at this new address (stu@walkingthestates.com) and we’ll verbally spar.

Right on.

Stu
